Hilton Head, South Carolina: 1864. 9 7/8” x 7 7 7/8”. Single sheet, handwritten both sides. Very good: old folds, chip at left edge not affecting text.
This document records the proceeds of sale of the belongings of ten African American soldiers who served with Company F, 9th Regiment, United States Colored Troops. The 9th U.S. Colored Infantry was organized at Camp Stanton in Benedict, Maryland, beginning November 11, 1863. In March, 1864, they arrived at Hilton Head. Since the regiment did not enter combat until May, 1864, we assume these men died of disease. We were able to confirm that one of them, Robert Laws, died in a hospital in December, 1863. Very good.
