Hardcover. Very Good. Item #683
8vo 8" - 9" tall; Brown Family Photo Album Showing Travels to Tucson, Denver, Estes Park, Michigan City and More. Pennsylvania, Arizona, Colorado and elsewhere: 1907-1921 (but mostly 1911-1912). 9½” x 14½”. Full limp leather. 100 pages with 400 black and white photos mostly adhesive mounted, final 7 pages blank. Photos measure from 1” x 1” to 6” x 8¼” but most are around 4” x 3¼”. Approximately 15% have names and/or place names written on them, otherwise there are no other captions. Album good, front cover detached, first two leaves detached, leaves a bit wavy. Photos generally very good or better, a few rather rough, some faded and around 10 are missing. This is apparently the album of the Brown family of southwest Pennsylvania (captioned town names include Monessen and Washington—where there's a great shot of a water tower). The album is a bit disjointed as it jumps around from Pennsylvania, to Colorado (Denver, Longmont, Estes Park) , Tucson, Racine, Michigan City Indiana, Mexico and elsewhere. 80% are family photos, which usually bore us, but as you can see from the samples, many family shots are reasonably interesting and there are approximately 30 that show views of cities. There are photos of hunting and fishing, nearly two dozen of factory workers (one factory is identified as a sugar refinery) and a series of shots outside Tucson that show a family living in squalor as well as a great series showing crowds at the St. Augustine Cathedral. There are also a fair amount of rural and wilderness/desert shots around Tucson, Colorado and other areas they traveled. There's a series of them at a beach in Michigan City, Indiana, two of a parade in Denver in 1912, and much more. Lots to discover.
