[los Angeles, California]: N. P., 1960. Ephemera. 4to 11" - 13" tall; [African-Americana][Music] 11¼” x 8½”. Stapled wrappers. Pp. [28]. Very good: lightly toned, corners a bit curled, two small paint splotches to front wrapper. Founded in the mid-late 1930s, the Wings Over Jordan Choir created the first independently produced national and international radio shows by African Americans. For around ten years, its show “Negro Hour” aired on CBS affiliates, leading to public performances all throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to music, the show would feature important black speakers such as Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. And Langston Hughes. This program from one of their many 1960 performances in California contains a brief history of the group, some images, and with a couple dozen black-owned business ads, it acts as a de facto directory of the Central Avenue District. None on OCLC. Please do not hesitate to contact us for additional information and/or photos and we will respond promptly.
