[Striking Shots of Native Americans].

Place unknown: 1927. 5¾” x 7”. Limp cloth “SnapShots” album, taped title to front. 26 black construction paper pages with 57 B&W photographs pasted down. Photos range from 1½” x 3” to 3½” x 5¾” and none are captioned. Album fair: wholly detached; pages lightly to moderately chipped. Contents generally very good with some light soiling and spotting; a few photos loose and several slightly wavy.

This is a collection of dramatic and compelling snapshots, deemed a “Northern Trip” in the summer of 1927. The shots seem to show natives of Central American descent, and include depictions of tribal traditions, fantastic images of individuals and striking natural scenery.

The majority of the album, 20 images, show Natives in traditional dress performing song and dance, as white visitors look on. There are 16 lovely shots of tribal elders, mothers with babies, Natives smiling shyly or transfixed on something in the distance, and a child crouched behind a tepee. About a dozen striking scenics show tall trees, big skies with strong clouds, a waterfall and a feeling of expanse. The last three photos, pasted inside the rear cover, may show the compilers, a white-appearing couple perhaps in their late 60s, separately pursuing their artistic crafts.

A captivating collection conveying Native traditions, nature and humanity. Very good. Item #3648
