[Wood Serving Tray Created at Camp Wyndal].
[Gauley Bridge, West Virginia]: 1944. Lacquered wood tray measuring 8” x 17½”. Very good with moderate wear.
This is a tray created at Camp Wyndal, a summer camp for children of African American miners located near Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Attendees were the children of those who worked at the Keystone, Carswell and Maitland mines of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates, Koppers Coal division. According to contemporary newspaper accounts, the camp first opened in 1939 and was still active as of 1945. One article reported that 70 children attended in 1942 and that “during these camping periods the youngsters will live in fully equipped cabins and will participate in a program of body and mind-building recreation under the supervision of experienced counselors and Red Cross instructors.”
