Group of Black Panther Party Protest Pins from the BPP Detroit Office

This group of original Black Panther Party protest pins originates from the organization's Detroit office and reflects several of the major political campaigns championed by the Party and its allies during the late 1960s and '70s. Included are examples bearing the slogans “Free Angela,” “Boycott Lettuce,” and “Free Bobby,” causes associated respectively with the defense of Angela Davis, support for the United Farm Workers' grape and lettuce boycotts, and the campaign to secure the release of Bobby Seale.

Varying in size and exhibiting rust and wear from age and use, the pins survive as authentic artifacts of grassroots political activism. Intended for public display on clothing and bags, they offered supporters a visible means of expressing solidarity with the social justice and civil rights movements of the era.
