Snohomish County Puget Sound 1905 [Cover title].

[Everett, Washington]: [Bart and Cantwell], [1905]. 10¼” x 12¾”. Cloth over boards, title gilt. 25 construction paper leaves with one handcolored photograph adhered each recto. Most photos 6” x 7 ” or the inverse, one 5½” x 5¾” (circular) and all are captioned in the negative. Very good plus: cloth a bit faded and worn at spine tips and corners with a touch of faint scuffing; pages wavy and a few photos loose but holding firmly.

This is a specially made photo album of gorgeous hand-colored photos of the Puget Sound area, Washington state.

These lovely, scenic views, depicting lakes and rivers, Mt. Rainier and Native folks, appear to have been taken by George Cantwell and the Bart and Cantwell firm. All the captions are in the same hand; two note “Cantwell, photographer” and several “B&C.” Our research shows that Cantwell worked in Everett with Colfax Bart, also published The Klondike, A Souvenir, and later worked for the Los Angeles County Museum.

The beautifully hand-colored shots reveal “A Summer Sea,” “Dolly Varden Trout” at Baker Lake, Snoqualmie Falls, “Moonlight” on the Puget Sound and “Glaciers On Mt. Baker.” We see “Beautiful Lake Chelan,” “A Mountain Stream,” a “Timber Claim” within the woods, “Siwash” baby in a hammock on the bough and an elder Native “Maiden.”

A unique and lovely tribute to one of the country's most beautiful regions. Very good +. Item #9441
