1993 American Indian Art Calendar [Cover title].

Norman, OK: Semihoye-Shawnnee Publications, [1992]. 11” x 14” (closed). Twelve-month calendar, pictorial wrappers, small hole through edge for hanging. Pp. [26]. Very good: light scuffing and creasing to wrappers; a few scattered faint stains. Signed by artists to front and ten pages; artist stamp to one page.

This is a rare and gorgeous wall calendar featuring the art of eleven Native Americans, nine of whom signed the work.

Each month shows a striking illustration, its title, a brief bio of the artist and the size, price and limited edition data of its original print. Nearly all the artists signed their respective pages, most with a warm note to “Bob.” The final pages hold longer text about the cover piece, “Ritual Traditions of the Human Woman” and its artist, Dana Tiger, who also made the art for the month of July. Dana was the daughter of renowned Muscogee Creek-Seminole painter Jerome Tiger and earned her own “acclaim for traditional representations of Native American women.” There is also a list of “1993 Powwow Dates” in Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Arizona, North Dakota, Texas, North Carolina, Connecticut and New York. A 1992 news article we found online shared that publisher Glen Harrington was married to a Creek woman and named his company “after the Indian names of his twin daughters.”

A rare calendar of beautiful Native art, complete with original signatures. Not in OCLC, which shows only the 1992 calendar at one institution. Very good. Item #9487

Price: $400.00
