Edward Everett Mount Vernon Papers Original Publication + 2 Autograph Ltr
Hardcover. This listing is for a bound volume of Edward Everett's “Mount Vernon Papers,” which contain the original columns as published in the New York Ledger. The essays were later reprinted in book form in 1860. Everett originally wrote these pieces around 1858 to help raise funds for the preservation of George Washington's estate. Robert Bonner, the publisher of the New York Ledger, paid Everett $10,000 for the series, which Everett promptly donated entirely to the Mount Vernon fund. The collected essays touch upon George Washington's life, American history, patriotism, and biographical sketches. The book also includes an engraved portrait of Everett and two of his original signed handwritten letters. The letters, dated 1834 and 1862, add important manuscript material to the collection and offer a unique glimpse into Everett's public career and persona. The book has 162 pages and measures 103 4” x 8”. It is bound in half morocco over leather, spine in six compartments with gilt lettering. The book is in overall good condition due to heavy board wear and a detached front board; internally very good plus with a slight wave to the leaves. Good. Item #969
